Abstract

The fluid control apparatus is connected to a surgical handpiece (50) with irrigation fluid supplied through a tube (56) and directed to the surgical site through a passage coaxial with the ultrasonic tool (52) and defined by the sheath (58). The irrigation fluid pressure is controlled by suspending the bottle or bag (102) at an appropriate height, with flow regulated by a remotely controlled solenoid shut-off valve (108,106) with a check valve (109) to prevent any back flow. Fluid is drawn from the surgical site through the aspiration conduit (110) by the suction of the peristaltic pump (112) and should an occlusion occur, the increase in vacuum level is detected by the transducer (120) which shuts off the pump (112). To release suction force which holds a tissue fragment against the aspiration inlet, the valve (132) is opened and rapid equalisation of pressure achieved.
