Abstract

A process is described for the preparation of starch- based plasma diluents by the hydrolytic decomposition of an amylopectin-rich starch to a specific molecular weight and partial etherisation of this to a particular level of substitution before or after hydrolysis. The process is characterised in that the hydrolytic disintegration is carried out at least in part with α-amylase, β- amylase or pululanase. Preferentially the disintegration is carried out to a molecular weight of 40,000 to 1,000,000 Daltons, and the etherisation with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide to a degree of substitution of 0.5 to 0.8. The plasma diluents to which the invention relates show a rapid fall in concentration during the first 24 hours, and a short organic half life.
