The process comprises (a) hydrogenating a tabersonine salt soln. with hydrogen in presence of Raney Ni at 25-50 deg.C under 8-30 atmos. to give vincadifformine; (b) forming the salt with an acid to block the tert. N atom and prevent formation of the N-oxide; (c) oxidising with a solid mixt. of maleic and permaleic acids, at -10 to 5 deg.C for 1-1.5 hrs. to give 3-oxy vincadifformine; (d) heating a soln. of this at 30-50 deg.C for 2-4 hrs. to give apovincamine, epivincamine and vincamine; (e) precipitating with ammonia; and (f) filtering to isolate the vincamine.
