Abstract

The cell consists of an anodic compartment contg. an activated titanium anode, a cathodic compartment contg. a cathodic conductor support, and a cation exchange membrane impermeable to the aq. solns. The compartments are fed by fluid streams of different compsn., the catholyte being an aq. soln. of alkali chloride and/or tin chloride, and the anolyte a soln. of alkali chloride or ferrous chloride and alkali chloride and/or HCl. The impurities in the feed soln. are eliminated previously using a less noble metal and/or extraction with solvents. The ferrous chloride in the anodic compartment is oxidised to ferric chloride and sodium and/or hydrogen ions pass through the membrane into the catholyte to keep the anolyte in electrical equilibrium.
