Abstract
Glycerol deriv. of formula (I) is made by (a) oxidn. of mannitol di-acetonyl by treatment with lead tetra-acetate, sodium meta-periodate or bismuthate in dry ethyl acetate at 0 deg.C to obtain the corresp. carbaldehyde and (b) catalytic redn. of this with Raney nickel, Pt or Ru as catalyst, with metals dissolved in alcohols or with mixed hydrides.
