Abstract

Improved prod. yields from delayed coking of a heavy hydrocarbon oil feedstock in a coking unit comprising a coker furnace, a coking drum and a coker fractionator to produce delayed coke and cracked liq. and gaseous hydrocarbon prods., are attained by (a) delayed coking the heavy hydrocarbon oil in the coking drum under conditions to yield coke having a volatile matter content not exceeding 15 wt.%; (b) passing overhead vapours from the coking drum to the coker fractionator; (c) condensing the highest boiling fraction of the overhead vapours and removing the fraction from the process; and (d) adding a diluent hydrocarbon, having a lower boiling range than the highest boiling fraction, to the heavy hydrocarbon oil feedstock prior to heating it to coking temp. in the coker furnace, the diluent hydrocarbon being added in an amt. to prevent coke deposition in the coker furnace.
