Abstract

A shock absorber 10 is equipped with a rebound (bounce) suppression assembly 22. The rebound suppression assembly 22 rests on a projection 30 secured on a piston rod 16. The rebound suppression assembly 22 includes an elastomeric ring 24 placed between two collars 26 and 28 which together form an annular chamber 74. At the end of the rebound travel of the piston rod 16, the rebound suppression assembly 22 is compressed in the axial direction between the projection 30 of the piston rod 16 and the rod guide 18 until the elastomeric ring 24 deforms in order to enter into contact with the inner wall 64 of the working cylinder. When the elastomeric ring deforms, the volume of the annular chamber is reduced. A restrictive passage 71 allows limited circulation of fluid from it. A supplementary chamber 70 is formed which is in limited fluid communication through the passage 71 with the cross section 68 of the rebound chamber 20. Supplementary compression of the rebound suppression assembly 22 reduces the volume of both chambers 70 and 74 and gives rise to limited fluid circulation from them through the passage 71 to the cross section 68 of the rebound chamber 20. Compression of the elastomeric ring and limited fluid circulation guarantee additional damping at the end of the rebound travel.
