Abstract

The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the helical winding of strip, standing on edge, onto tubes with a cross-section which differs from the circular form, preferably an oval or elliptical cross-section, the strip being drawn off a strip roll by the rotationally driven tube, being adapted to the particular radius of the tube by a tensile stress with cold deformation, and being subjected to a rolling operation directly upon application to the tube. To permit a tear-free and more rapid application of the strip, the strip is rolled out at least in its outer edge region during its periodically recurring application to tube regions with a small radius of curvature. The rolling roller used for this is mounted in the winding head so as to be parallel to the axis of rotation of the tube and movable relative to a rolling counter-surface, and is controlled by a pressure ram which is arranged between the radially displaceably guided winding head and a stationary thrust bearing.
