Abstract

Vascular prosthesis for use as a surgical graft comprises a length of animal ureter that has been subjected to glutaraldehyde (I) tanning. - The ureters may be obtd. from humans, oxen, cows, sheep, goats, pigs donkeys, camels, deer, kangaroos, etc. The ureter may be encompassed by a fibre mesh sheath, esp. made by weaving strands of multiple fine polyester fibres. The wall of the lumen of the meter may be set in a dilated condition by the (I) tanning so that it has a smooth cylindrical surface, e.g. by inserting a rod or tube in the lumen before the tanning. The mesh may be applied while the rod or tube is still present. The tanning is pref. with 0.05-10% (I) in buffer at pH 2-8, esp. 2.5% in buffer at pH 7.4, for 4-100 hrs., esp. 72 hrs. The grafts may be washed, bleached e.g. with H2O2, then packed in 50% alcohol for preservation and storage. For use the graft is removed from a supporting rod, and soaked in 3 baths of heparinised saline. - The ureters have adequate collagen contents and luminal surface characteristics so that after the tanning, they perform satisfactorily as vascular grafts, and surgical procedures in host animals are made unnecessary. The grafts have superior structures to human saphenous vein.
