Abstract
A crosslinked polymer compsn. comprises a linear ethylene homo- or copolymer, having a density of 0.940g/cc. at 25 degrees C, and a linearity 30 (pref. is not >10), expressed as the no. of pendant methyl gps. per 103C atoms of the polymer chain, the polymer being free of long chain branching. The compsn. pref. has a degree of crosslinking 40%, (expressed as gel content, according to ANSI/astm d 2765-68), and, prior ot crosslinking, a deltaT value >15 degrees C (delta T being the difference in degree C between the m.pt. of the polymer and to crystallisation temp.) The compsn. is specifically claimed for producing heat shrinkable sleeves, electrical insulators and reinforcements, and semi-permeable membranes partic. for electrolytic cells. By incorporation of fillers, e.g. C black, the compsn. can be made (semi) conducting and used in heating appts and electrical cables e.g. for dissipating electrical charges. The crosslinked compsn. has good mechanical props, e.g. extension at break, high temp. modulus, and resistance to abrasion and solvents.
