Abstract
The electrical discharge detection and location system uses acoustic waveguides. The waveguides (44) are designed to be fitted into the housing (22) of the inductive winding. The sound waves picked up from an electrical discharge source in the winding are transmitted to a remote point containing detectors. The detectors (36) produce an electrical signal representative of the electrical discharge. The waveguides have a longitudinal axis having a first end in proximity to the inductive winding. A second end is acoustically coupled to the detector (36). The detector (36) includes a piezoceramic element (94) which can respond to a single frequency e.g. 80 kHz or a wide range of frequencies e.g. 1 kHz-10 MHz.
