Abstract
Un procedimiento perfeccionado para la producción de aluminio metálico por la reducción carbotérmica de alúmina, que está basado en establecer una corriente circulante de escoria de alúmina fundida, que contiene carbono combinado, en la forma de al menos uno de los compuestos carburo u oxicarburo de aluminio, hacer circular la corriente de escoria de alúmina fundida a través de una zona de temperatura baja mantenida al menos en parte a una temperatura igual o superior a la requerida para la reacción de la alúmina de carbono para formar carburo de alumino: 2Al2O3+9C=Al4C3+6CO (ii) pero menor que la requerida para la reacción del carburo de aluminio con la alúmina para liberar Al metálico : Al4C3*Al2O3=6Al+3CO(iii) e introducir carbono es esta zona, hacer seguir adelante la corriente de alúmina fundida, enriquecida ahora en Al4C3 como resultado de la reacción (ii) a una zona de temperatura alta (mantenida al menos en parte a una temperatura igual o superior a la temperatura requerida para lareacción (iii)) y recoger y separar el aluminio metálico liberado en dicha zona de temperatura alta como resultado de la reacción (iii), enviándose luego la escoria de alúmina fundida procedente de la zona de temperatura alta a la misma u otra zona de temperatura baja mientras que se introduce alúmina en dicha corriente de escoria circulante en al menos un punto, en el que la circulación de la escoria es activada mediante la provisión de gas procedente de una fuente externa a presión.
