Abstract

The new nonporous glass composition contains a radioactive material in the form of oxides or elements which is embedded and immobilised in the glass matrix. The said composition contains at least 75 moles per cent of SiO2, in addition to a radiation activity higher than 1 millicurie per cm<3> of the composition and a high chemical durability in aqueous solution. The composition may be in the form of a glass article showing an outer enclosure or glass skin comprising at least 90 moles per cent of SiO2 and substantially free from radioactive material, and an inner core formed by the said composition. The composition is used for binding radioactive materials. The attached figure is a graphic representation of the fraction of waste released into the environment after 20,000 years' storage.
