Abstract

New process for the preparation of new 3b-amino or 3b-acyl-amino-4a-acetoxy azetidinone compounds which are useful antibacterial for the control of gram-negative bacterers producing b-lactamase and other pathogens or are useful intermediates in the preparation of said antibiotics, whose process is characterized by heating a thiazolidin-azetidinone with mercuric acetate in the presence of acetic acid, followed by hydrolysis. This invention relates to monocyclic b-lactam antibiotics which are 3b-acylaminoazetidin-2-ones.
