Abstract

Copolyesters are prepd. by treating 4,41-dicarboxy p-terphenyl or a diester of 1-6C alcohols with >=2 diols of =10C. They have m.pt. 150-350 degrees C. Pref. diesters are Me, Et and Pr. Diols include straight chain (pref. C2H6O2 and butane-1,4-diol), branched chain (pref. 2,2-diMe propane diol, 2,2-diEt propane diol and propane-1,2-diol), cycloaliphatic (pref. cyclohexane-1,4-diMeOH and cyclobutane-1,2 or 1,4-diMeOH), arylaliphatic (pref. p-xylylene glycol) and heterocyclic (pref. polyethoxy ethylene glycol). For long chain diols, mol. ratio of branched to straight is 5.95 (pref. 20:80) for short chain diols, ratio is 10:90 (pref. 25:75).
