Abstract

In a new procedure for improving the fungicidal action of dithiocarbamate salts, the salts are used in combination with a larger amount of a vinyl acetate polymer. The ratio of vinyl acetate polymer to dithiocarbamate salt is pref. ca 1:1 to ca 30:1 w/w. The vinyl acetate polymer forms a film which improves contact of the dithiocarbamate with the leaf surface and increases resistance to removal by weathering. The vinyl acetate polymer when applied in the form of an emulsion has good spreading properties and rapid set, and the film formed is soft, flexible and weather-resistant. Examples describes biological testing of dithiocarbamates in combination with vinyl acetate polymers. Thus with tomato plants artificially infected with Phytophthora infestants and sprayed with maneb (100ppm) + polyvinyl acetate 202A (600ppm), 77% inhibition of the fungus is obtained when the plants receive 25.4mm of rain after 4 hrs. whereas only 51% inhibition is obtained with maneb (100ppm) is applied without polyvinylacetate.
