Abstract
6,10,14-Trimethylpentadecan-2-one (phytone) is prepared in high yield and high purity by (a) subjecting an olefin compound of the formula I below < IMAGE > in which A denotes either the group <2bL>C=CH- or the group <2bL>CH-CH2- and X is either the group < IMAGE > or the group < IMAGE > to a hydroformylation reaction, (b) reacting the monoaldehyde formed in step (a) with acetone in the presence of a basic catalyst to give a hydroxyketone and eliminating water from the latter with the formation of an unsaturated ketone of the formula II below < IMAGE > and (c) reducing the double bond(s) in the unsaturated ketone of the formula II to give a single bond, or single bonds.
