Abstract

Method for manufacturing ophthalmic quality glass lenses having a local progressive variation of photochromic or phototropic behavior from an edge to a separate area thereof consisting in: preparing an oxide glass body from a mass of glass making, said body containing in its volume at least 0.005% by volume of at least one silver halide chosen from the group consisting of silver chloride, silver bromide and silver iodide and mixtures of these elements, subjecting said article of glass to a heat treatment, said heat treatment consisting in subjecting a zone of said lens to a temperature above the point of deformation, but below the point of softening for a period of time sufficient to form silver halide particles with an average linear dimension of about 50 nm, to vary substantially the temperature of the heat treatment through of said lens from said edge to said zone separated from it, in such a way that silver halide particles with a progressively smaller average linear dimension are formed in order to obtain a lens characterized by a local variation of its phototropic and photochromic behavior .
