A method of obtaining useful hydrocarbon products from organic feedstock, including coal and analogous carbonaceous materials, crushed rubber tires, industrial plastics waste, and household garbage, including the steps of: maintaining an elongated tubular member at a temperature of operation of between about 800º f (426.6º c) and about 1800º f (982.2º c); introducing untreated feedstock at room temperature at the inlet end of said elongated member whereby the temperature of the feedstock rapidly rises to the operating temperature; continuously moving the feed material through the elongated tubular member at a substantially constant rate of speed in the substantial absence of oxygen; and continuously separating gases and vapors from the tubular member in a vacuum of between about two inches (0.069 kg/cm2) to about six inches (0.207 kg/cm2) of mercury; and recover the residue.
