Abstract

An apparatus for tightening a clamping member comprising a stiffness meter to determine a torque gradient, characterized in that the meter comprises deformable coupling means arranged between output means to communicate rotational movement to a member, and input means to receive rotary energy, the coupling means being capable of transmitting a torque from the input means to the output means, first sensor means responsive to the input means to develop a first series of signals representative of the rotary displacement of the input means, second sensing means that respond to the output means to develop a second series of signals representative of the rotary movement by the coupling means of the output means, and comparator means that respond to the first and second series of signals rare to determine the difference in the number of signs in the first and second series of signals during a reference number of consecutive signals in the second series of signals, when energy is transmitted by the coupling means from the input means to the output means, said difference being a function of the gradient of the torque transmitted by the coupling means, the stiffness meter further including a first circuit means responsive to the comparing means for sequentially storing information representative of the maximum torque gradient developed to any given point during actuation of a member by the means output, and further including a second circuit means for producing a control signal when the instantaneous torque gradient has fallen to a predetermined proportion of the maximum torque gradient developed during clamping of the clamp member, and control means responsive to the control signal to control the input ada, energy by the energy input means.
