Abstract

A process for catalytic hydrodesulfurization of residual hydrocarbon oils containing vanadium and nickel without catalyst replenishment, in which the hydrocarbon oil is consecutively contacted with catalyst I and catalyst II (as defined herein above) which satisfy the following requirements: (a) each of the individual catalysts of which the combination of catalyst I and catalyst II is composed, has a total pore volume exceeding 0.30 ml/g, of which less than 10% it is present in the form of pores having a diameter exceeding 100 nm, (b) Catalyst II has a mean specific diameter of pores (p) and a mean specific diameter of particles (d) such that the ratio p/(d) 0.8 of Catalyst II satisfies the requirement: ** (See formula) ** (c) if the combination of catalyst I and catalyst II is composed of two catalysts, catalyst I has p and d values such that the ratio p/(d) 0.9 of catalyst I satisfies the requirement: ** (See formula) ** whereas if the combination of catalyst I and catalyst II is made up of more than two catalysts, the previous requirement regarding [p/(d) 0.9] cat.I applies to the average value of p/(d) 0.9 of catalyst I, which is determined as the weighted average of the values of p/(d) 0.9 of each of the individual catalysts of which catalyst I is composed, (d) the percentage of the volume of the total catalyst occupied by catalyst II (vol%, of catalyst II) is between 10 and 90%, and satisfies the requirement: ** (See formula) ** where SF represents the sulfur content of the feed and SP the required sulfur content in the desulfurized product, and (e) if the combination of catalyst I and catalyst II consists of more than two catalysts, each of the individual catalysts of which catalyst I is composed has p and d values such that the ratio p/(d) 0.9 of each of these catalysts is greater than [p/(d) 0.9] cata.II (p in nm, d in mm, PH2 in bar, Sp and SF in percentage by weight).
