A process for preparing 5-fluoro-2-methyl-1- (p-methylsulfinylbenzylidene) indenyl-3-acetic acid comprising the steps of: (a) reacting 6-fluoro-2-methylindan-1,3-dione-3,3'-0-ethylene ketal or 5-fluoro-2-methylindan-1,3-dione with an agent capable of forming a acetic acid side chain on said 1,3-dione to form a 6-fluoro-2-methylindenyl-3,3'-0-ethylene ketal-acetic acid compound or a 5-fluoro-2-methyl compound -ind-2-en-1-one-3-acetic and esterify the latter compound if necessary; (b) hydrolyzing said ketal-1-acetic acid compound to form the corresponding ind-2-en-1-one compound, (c) reacting said ind-2-en-1-one compound from the step (a) or (b) with a p-methylsulfinylbenzyl compound to form the 5-fluoro-2-methyl-1- (p-methylsulfinylbenzylidene) -indenyl-3-acetic acid compound or alternatively reacting the 5-fluoro- 2-methyldadan-1,3-dione-3,3'-0-cyclin-ketal with said p-methylsulfinylbenzyl compound to form 5-fluoro-2-methyl-1- (p-methylsulfinylbenzylidene) indan-3,3'- 0-ethylene ketal and then carry out steps (b) and (a) on said 5-fluoro-2-methyl-l (p-raethylsulfinylbenzylidene) -indan-3,3'-0-ethylene ketal to form the compound of 5-fluoro-2-methyl-l- (p-methyl-l-ufinyl-benzylidene) -idenyl-3-acetic acid; y (d) when necessary, hydrolyzing said indenyl-3-acetic acid compound to form the desired product.
