Abstract
Polymerization process and large capacity reactor for its implementation, whose polymerization takes place in a liquid phase aqueous dispersion system of normally solid and uniform polymer particles from monomers consisting substantially of at least one vinyl halide monomer., whose procedure includes: loading a generally cylindrical reaction zone with liquid polymerization medium consisting of water, surfactant and monomer at a temperature and pressure sufficient to allow polymerization; further addition of catalyst to initiate polymerization of the monomer; agitation of the polymerization medium with a rotating stirring medium so that a substantially laminar flow is formed along a circular path around a generally vertical axis and centrally located in the reaction zone; stirring the polymerization medium near the periphery of the reaction zone with a stator-type stirring medium, so as to produce turbulent mixing located next to said periphery; and maintaining the liquid polymerization medium at a temperature of the order of approximately 26.6ºC to 204.4ºC and of the reaction zone at a pressure of the order of approximately 3.515 to 17.575 kilograms per square centimeter by controlling the heat flow of the polymerization by a substantially vertical condensation tube mounted flush with the inner surface of the reaction zone above the latter.
