Process for the preparation of nitrile of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid nitrile by reaction of propylene or isobutylene with air and/or oxygen and ammonia at elevated temperatures in a fluidized or fluidized bed in the presence of a catalyst in powder form, consisting of a mixture of the oxides of iron, bismuth, molybdenum and phosphorus and is applied on a support of silicic acid, characterized in that the reaction is carried out at temperatures between 350 and 520ºC and pressures between 0.1 and 10 absolute atmospheres in the presence of the said catalyst, which had been prepared by homogenous impregnation of a bismuth phosphomalybdate catalyst/silicic acid in powder form, previously formed, with a volumetric amount of an aqueous solution of an iron salt, preferably trivalent iron nitrate, such that corresponds approximately to 1 to 2.5 times the previously determined pore volume of the phosphomolybdate catalyst or of bismuth/silicic acid; by slow drying the mass of iron-containing catalyst, wet, at about 120 to 250ºC with simultaneous decomposition of the iron salt to form iron oxide; and final sintering of the dried catalyst at about 600 to 700º c.
