A process for the preparation of an azetidin-2-one of formula (I): ** (see formula) ** Where n represents 0 or 1; x represents an amino or substituted amino group; r represents hydrogen or an organic radical; a represents a carbonyl group (see formula); and b represents hydrogen, which process consists in reacting a compound of formula (IV): ** (see formula) ** Where n, x, b and r are defined by referring to formula (I), with a primary or secondary amine and, if the resulting intermediate enamine is not hydrolyzed spontaneously under the reaction conditions chosen for the reaction of the compound of formula (IV) with the primary or secondary amine, subsequently subjecting the resulting intermediate enamine to acid hydrolysis to form the desired compound of formula (I).
