Process for the manufacture of anhydrous chromium sesquioxide by reduction of a hexavalent chromium compound, not thermally decomposable at a temperature below 300ºC, preferably chromic anhydride, characterized in that the hexavalent chromium compound is first subjected to heating in an atmosphere non-reducing between approximately 137 and 280ºC, then secondly to a heating in a reducing atmosphere between approximately 250 and 350ºC.
