Process for obtaining dimethyl terephthalate of high purity, having an acid number of the order of 0.01 to 0.03 and a freezing point of 140.62 to l40.63º c, characterized in that it comprises esterifying terephthalic acid that has below 10 ppm of 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and 20,000 ppm of p-toluic acid, with methanol, the weight ratio of the respective reactants being from 1.0: 2.0 to 5.0 at a temperature in the range of 200 to 350ºC and a pressure of 35 to 350 kg/cm2 relative; distilling off methanol and water byproduct of the resulting ester product, leaving a liquid residue of crude dimethyl terephthalate having, as ester impurities, methyl esters of 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and p-toluic acid at a temperature in the range of 140 to 215º c; and rectifying the liquid waste at a pressure of 12 to 760 mm hg, in three fractions consisting of a first, impure fraction, in an amount of 1 to 3% of the liquid residue containing the methyl esters of 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and acid p -tolical, a second fraction consisting of said dimethyl terephthalate of high purity, in an amount of 1.14 to 1.16 with respect to the weight of terephthalic acid and a tail fraction containing 50-90% of monomethyl terephthalate and 10-50% dimethyl terephthalate, on a weight basis.
