A method for the preparation of derivatives of substituted indenylacetic acids of the formula: **(See formula)** where (Ar) can be aryl or heteroaryl; R1 can be hydrogen, lower alkyl or halogenated lower alkyl; R2 can be hydrogen or alkyl; R3, R4, R5, and R6 may each be hydrogen, alkyl, acyloxy, alkoxy, nitro, amino, acylamino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, dialkyl aminoalkyl, sulfamyl, alkylthio, mercapto, halogen, hydroxy, hydroxyalkyl, alkylsulfonyl, cyano., carboxyl, carboalkoxy, carbamido, haloalkyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkoxy; R7, can be alkylsulfinyl or alkylsulfonyl; R8 can be hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, or haloalkyl; and M is hydroxy, lower alkoxy, substituted lower alkoxy, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, N-morpholino, hydroxyalkylamino, polyhydroxyalkylamino, dialkylaminoalkylamino, aminoalkylamino and the group OMe, where Me is a cation, whose procedure includes the steps of: (a) react an indene with an aldehyde; and (b) oxidize the resulting indenacetic acid.
