Hydrolytic process for obtaining aromatic carboxyacids, by hydrolysis of its corresponding aromatic nitrile, characterized in that it comprises: in a first step maintaining a thick aqueous suspension containing the aromatic nitrile, water and a small amount of a catalyst chosen from the group consisting of alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hydroxides, carbonates and salts, of the aromatic carboxylic acids and ammonium salts of said acids at a temperature of about 148.8 to about 315.5ºC for a sufficient period of time to hydrolyze virtually all the aromatic nitrile to a hydrolysis product: in a second step contacting the hydrolysis product of the previous step with countercurrent water vapor, thereby separating ammonia from said product; in a third step cooling the product of the second stage at a temperature of about 37.6 to about 148.8º c, after which the aromatic carboxylic acid is removed; and finally recover the aromatic carboxyacid.
