Abstract

An annular thread rolling tool 1 is mounted on a spindle 2 by co-operating splines 5 and grooves 4, the flanks of at least one spline engaging with the walls of the associated groove, while a radial and lateral clearance is provided between the remaining splines and grooves. Such a mounting for the tool permits high pressures to be exerted during a thread rolling operation without flexing of the spindle in preferential planes. Instead of parallel flanks, the splines can have inclined ones in this case, only the one groove which is positively engaged by a spline has inclined flanks. The tool is held on the spindle by a threaded collar 13, Fig. 3, which urges the tool against a flange 11 attached to, or formed integrally with the spindle.
