A process for the preparation of 3-hydroxy-alpha- (aminoethyl) -benzyl alcohol derivatives of formula: **(See formula)** where R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, alkoxy, phenyl, substituted phenyl, benzyl, substituted benzyl or a heterocyclic radical; R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl, or substituted phenyl and where R1 and R2 can be changed to form a saturated or unsaturated alicyclic or heterocyclic ring; R3 is hydrogen, alkyl or phenyl, X is hydrogen, halogen, alkoxy, alkyl or phenyl, and n is 0 or the integer 1; whose procedure consists of: (a) react a compound of formula: **(See formula)** where X is as defined above, with a lower alkanoic anhydride or a lower alkyl acid halide, to form a compound of the formula: (b) react the product of step (a) above, with R-X1, where R is the radical **(See formula)** where R1, R2, R3 and n are those defined above; and X1 is halogen, a sulfonic ester, or a quaternary ammonium derivative, to form a compound of the formula: **(See formula)** where R1, R2, R3 and n are those defined above, (c) deacylizing the compound produced in step (b) to form the desired product.
