Abstract

A veterinary composition comprises 0.001% to 0.0125% by weight of antibiotic X-537A or a non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as the active ingredient, in association with a compatible carrier material. Preferably 0.00312% to 0.00625% of the antibiotic is present in crystalline form. The composition renders poultry (e.g. chickens or turkeys) suffering from or subject to coccidiosis free from or resistant to the disease when administered orally, either by addition to the feed supply or in the form of a tablet, pill or bolus. The composition may be prepared by mixing the antibiotic or a non-toxic pharmaceutically acce:ptable salt thereof with a feedstuff and/or extender. If desired, a concentrated premix, for further dilution with feedstuff and/or extender, may be prepared. Specified salts of the antibiotic are alkali metal (e.g. sodium and potassium), alkaline earth metal (e.g. calcium) and organic salts. Typical carrier materials are commercial poultry feeds, ground cereal grains, grain byproducts, plant protein concentrates (e.g. from soy or peanuts), fermentation byproducts, salt, limestone or mixtures thereof. Liquid dispersions can be prepared by using water or vegetable oil preferably including a surface active agent such as ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and solubilizers. Other additives which may be present in typical poultry feeds are stabilized fats, animal protein (e.g. fish meal, fish solubles or meat scraps), B-vitamin carriers (including dried milk products), other vitamins, calcium and phosphorous supplements, iodized salt, manganese sulphate, zinc carbonate, methionine or its hydroxy analogue and an antioxidant.
