Abstract

Lactams are produced by heating a solution of a compound of formula wherein X and X1 are divalent aliphatic radicals which may be the same or different, in a non-hydrocarbon organic solvent containing a salt of an element of Group I or II. The examples prepare caprolactam with cyclohexanone and caproamide formed as byproducts.
