A method of compressing a gaseous feed stream, predominantly hydrogen, comprising compressing said stream by passage through a multi-stage centrifugal compressor, and adding to said compressed stream a hydrocarbon of molecular weight in the range of 30 to 80 so that the feed stream contains about 1 to 12% of said hydrocarbon, said hydrocarbon acting by increasing the effective compression of the hydrogen by said compressor to a value higher than the level otherwise achievable with it, under the same conditions of work, but in the absence of added hydrocarbon.
