Abstract

A gas and/or vapour discharge lamp comprises a U-shaped discharge vessel 1 and an outer bulb surrounding the discharge vessel, the vessel being supported with respect to the outer bulb in the axial direction and in two orthogonal directions at right angles to the axial direction by two at least mainly metallic wire spring structures, the first located near the bend and the second near the two limb ends of the U- shaped vessel, wherein at least one of the spring structures comprises two substantially similar U- shaped parts 3, 4 bearing partly on the outer bulb, the parts being symmetrically disposed on either side of, and at least approximately parallel to, the plane going through the longitudinal axes of the limbs of the discharge vessel, each end portion 3a, 4a of a U-shaped part of this spring structure being connected with the adjacent end portion of the other U-shaped part by a transverse connection 5, 6 bearing against an adjacent limb of the discharge vessel. Parts 3, 4, 5, 6 are formed from a single length of wire. A further length of wire having transverse sections 7, 8 connected to U-shaped parts 3, 4 has loops 9, 10, 11 which contact the outer bulb, the free ends of loops 9, 10 projecting through the gap between sections 7, 8. An exhaust tubulation 13 extends through the space formed by wire parts 3, 4, 8, 10. The two limb ends of the discharge vessel have pinches 43, 44 (Fig. 2, not shown) and the wire parts of the spring structure in contact therewith have interposed thermally and electrically insulating elements.
