Abstract

Hollow cylindrical cages 28a for ball bearings, are injection moulded in a cavity 27a defined between an outer mould portion 6, attached to a base-plate 1 which is provided with injection passages 7, 8, and a retractable inner core 26 mounted to a plate 2, with the ball retaining openings being formed by annular flanges 30 of a plurality of radially retractable cores 10 which are displaced by a plurality of axially displaceable tines 20 of a rake 17. Each tine 20 co-operates with a guide groove 22 on each of two adjacent retractable cores 10. The adjacent cores 10 may be located in circular paths, or the adjacent cores may be staggered along a spiral path of approximately 3 degrees pitch to the axis of the mould when the tines 20 are also similarly inclined and the rake 17 is mounted to the retractable plate 2 at a bearing 16 permitting relative rotational movement with respect thereto on displacement of the cores 10. The inner core 26 is mounted on the plate 2, for relative axial movement with respect thereto, via springs 28, whereby the core 26 is retained in the moulding cavity until the cores 10 have been retracted, and in which retracted position the cores 10 are then retained by wires 13 for subsequent re-engagement by the advancing tines 20. The bearing cage is stripped from the retracted core 26 by ejectors 31.
