Abstract
The position of a rotatable member, e.g. the barrel of a nuclear reactor, carrying a coded pattern of coils e1 1 . . . e7 1 , e7 2 . . . arranged-in columns parallel to the axis of rotation of the member relative to a fixed member carrying a row of electro-magnetic exciter coils a 1 . . . a 5 to each of' which a different frequency f 1 . . . f 5 is supplied is determined by the frequency signal induced in a conductor g in accordance with whichcolumn of coils is aligned with the exciter coils: In the embodiment described the barrel may be positioned in any one of twenty positions by closing the switches 1 which correspond to the coils arranged in - a cavity in the required column. If, eg., column 9 is required, switches 1 1 , 14 are closed so that frequencies - f 1 , f 4 ,are fed to a comparator j. A signal comprising the combinationof all five frequencies is fed on conductor b to filters c 1 . . . c 5 associated with exciter coils a 1 . . . a 5 so that as the columns of coils are rotated (by, a motor,o driving the barrel) in front of theexciter coils, frequency signals are fed to the comparator j. When the frequency signal representing f 1 + f 4 is obtained a relay m is operated to stop the motor. A sixth frequency f 6 is also transmitted on conductor-b this signal only reaching one of the exciting coils when its associated filter fails, an error signal then being generated.
