Abstract
Most of the refrigeration required to liquefy compressed feed gas, e.g. natural methane, is met by dividing the feed stream leaving a drier 11 into a major stream 12 which after being cooled in an exchanger 17 is expanded without liquefaction and to above atmospheric pressure in a turbine 37 coupled to a compressor 45 supplied with at least some of the feed gas, and into a minor stream 13 which after being freed of condensables in an absorber 15 is cooled and liquefied in exchangers 17, 21 traversed by counterflowing turbine-expanded major stream and is then sub-cooled in an exchanger 23, expanded to atmospheric pressure in reducing valves 25, 28 and fed to a storage tank 29 from which vapour is withdrawn by a blower 31 and returned through a line 32 through exchangers 23, 21, 17 which are also cooled by flash gas from valve 25 passing through a line 30. The minor stream leaving expansion valve 25 is fed into a separator 26 and liquid withdrawn therefrom through a line 27 is sub-cooled at 33 by a portion of the liquid being expanded at a valve 27B and the so-vaporized portion is then fed into line 32. The minor and major feed streams leaving the cold end of exchanger 17 are freed of liquid C 2 hydrocarbons in drums 18, 34 and said hydrocarbons are fed to a drum 39 together with the expanded major stream leaving turbine 37. Overhead gas in drum 39 is fed through a line 42 to the compressor 45 and discharged into a consumer line 46, whilst condensate in drum 39 is in part fed through a line 43 to line 42 and in part through a control valve 50 to the tank 29, from which liquefied gas is withdrawn by a pump 52 vaporized at 53 and fed to a consumer line 54. In a modification compressors 45A, 45B, Fig. 2 (not shown), driven by turbines 37A. 37B arranged in two stages compress already pressurized feed gas prior to its entry into the drier.
