Abstract

An annular die holder 10 comprises a die actuator 12 with an annular portion 28 around which annular piezoelectric transducers 22, 24 and rigid supporting ring members 18, 20 are concentrically mounted, the die 14 being housed within the portion 28 of the actuator. The actuator 12 has a flange 34 rigidly connected to a fixed support 38 and a slotted sleeve 36 between the flange and the portion 28. The die actuator 12 and the ring members 18, 20 are made of electrically conductive material and the actuator and the outer member 20 are connected to one terminal of a signal generator 26 and the ring member 18 to the other terminal. When an electric signal is imposed on the transducers at the required resonance frequency the die holding structure 10 expands and contracts radially at the resonant frequency and the friction between the die and the rod 16 is reduced. The transducers 22, 24 are of lead zirconate or barium titanate and are provided with an electro-deposited film of silver on their radially inner and outer faces as an electrode. The holder is assembled by shrink fitting comprising heating the outer member 20 to 225 F. for one hour and cooling the outer transducer 24 in dry ice for one hour. The outer member 20 is machined to provide a slip-fit with this temperature difference. The transducer must be discharged by a jumper wire after any heating or cooling. The assembly of the member 20 and the transducer 24 is then heated and the inner member 18 cooled and inserted therein. The procedure is repeated for the inner transducer 22 and the actuator 12. The transducers are in radial compression after assembly.
