Abstract
A method for stabilizing an organic substrate against deterioration during storage or use, which comprises adding thereto a stabilizing concentration of an acid, amine and phosphorus reaction product obtained by reacting a phosphorus-containing compound selected from the group of phosphates, thiophosphates, phosphinates and phosphonates with the polymer product resulting from reacting (a) a compound selected from the group consisting of (1) a polyhalo-polyhydroxy-polycarboxylic acid having the general structure ** (See formula) ** where X is selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydrogen and an alkyl radical having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, with at least two X halogen, and is selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydrogen and an alcohol radical having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, m is an integer from 1 to 4, and n and p are zero or an integer from 1 to 4, (2) an anhydride of an acid having said general structure, (3) an ester of an acid having said general structure, and (4) a diol whose structure corresponds to the general structure of said modified acid only in that the carboxyl groups of said acid are substituted by hydroxyl groups, with (b) a compound selected from the group consisting of (1) an alkanolamine having at least two hydroxyl groups and (2) an alkanolamine having at least two amino groups.
