5 - [3 - (C1- 5 alkyl) - aminopropyl]- and 5-[3 - (C1- 5 alkyl) - aminopropylidene] - 5H -dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptenes optionally having one or more C1- 5 alkyl, C1- 5 perfluoro-alkyl C1- 5 alkylamino, di-(C1- 5 alkyl)-amino, C1- 5 alkylsulphonylamino, halogen, hydroxy, C1- 5 alkoxy, C1- 5 perfluoroalkoxy, carboxy, C1- 5 perfluoro-alkylthio, C1- 5 alkylsulphonyl, C1- 5 perfluoro-alkylsulphonyl, sulphamoyl, and mono- or di-(C1- 5 alkyl)-sulphamoyl nuclear substituents are prepared from the corresponding N-dialkyl 10,11-dihydro compounds by reaction with a cyanogen halide to replace an N-alkyl group with a cyano group, dehydrogenating the product to give the 10,11-unsaturated derivative and then hydrolysing this compound to give the desired N-monoalkyl product.
