Abstract
The method of making a polyisocyanurate, having improved resistance to distortion and improved compressive strength, at elevated temperatures, which comprises polymerizing (A) a material selected from the group consisting of (I) an organic polyisocyanate, (II) a polyurethane prepolymer having reactive-NCO groups, (III) a polyamide prepolymer having reactive groups -NCO, (IV) a polyol having a hydroxyl number of about 30 to 600, and an organic polyisocyanate in a stoichiometric amount, at least in excess, of that required to react with all the hydroxyl radicals of said polyol, (V) a polybasic acid having an acid number of about 30 to 600 and an organic polyisocyanate in a stoichiometric amount at least in excess of that required to react with all carboxyl radicals of said acid, and (VI) mixtures of the foregoing, in admixture with a minor amount sufficient to cause the trimerization of the -NCO of (B) a material selected from the group consisting of (1) an epoxide and a material that has the formula: ** (See formula) ** (2) an epoxide and a substituted benzene having the formula: ** (See formula) ** (3) the substituted benzene of (2) above, in which the above formula R is an alkylene radical, of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, R 'is an alkyl radical of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R "is selected from the group consisting of halogen and alkyl radical of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, A is selected from the group consisting of oxygen and sulfur, x has a value of 0 to 2, and has a value of 1 to 2. , z has a value of 1 to 3, the sum of x, y, z is 6, and there is at least one y and a z, and wherein said epoxide has at least one 1,2-epoxide group and is a liquid at a temperature of approximately 15 to 10ºC.
