Abstract

In a device for removing the sheath from a nuclear fuel element, the sheath is torn or prised open along a groove and the fuel needles ejected by a piston. The prising action and the fuel ejection are effected by hydraulic rams. The sheath groove is engaged at several points along its length by teeth mounted on arms which are moved laterally by a gear and worm assembly operated by a rack driven by the associated ram. Disengagement of the teeth from the groove during the operative arm movement is prevented by a resilient mounting between the arms and the supporting shafts.
