Abstract

Synthetic polyester filaments, fibres, and fabrics are treated with a compound containing at least one chemical group which confers some desirable property upon the surface of the treated material and at least one alcoholic hydroxyl group, e.g. a poly (oxyethylene) glycol of average molecular weight about 600, and an involatile strong acid, having a first dissociation constant of not less than 10-3 in water at 25 DEG C. and a boiling point above 250 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure, e.g. sulphuric acid, and heated to a temperature and for a time such that chemical groups derived from the compound are attached to the surface of the treated material by newly formed covalent bonds. The materials treated may comprise polyesters and co-polyesters derived from terephthalic acid and may be linear or slightly cross-linked or branched, e.g. by the incorporation of a tri-or tetrafunctional reactant such as glycerol, pentaerythritol or trimesic acid during manufacture of the polyester. The group in the applied compound which confers some desirable property upon the surface of the treated material may be a group which gives rise to hydrophilic and anti-static properties, absorbs or transforms ultra violet radiation, repels flames, kills fungi or bacteria or provides increased adhesion to rubbers, rubber latices, paints, inks or dyestuffs. The compound may also undergo other reactions either within single molecules or between molecules of the compound itself or with some other added component, e.g. another ester or polyester, at the same time as the reaction with the surface of the treated materials so that the chemical group attached to the surface although derived from an alcoholic compound R OH may not be the group RO but may be modified by the production of double bonds or ether or ester linkages. If the compound is susceptible to oxidation an antioxidant, e.g. thio bis-(3-methyl-6-t-butyl phenol) may be included in the treating composition.
