Abstract

The mandrel has an end piece (5) mounted on a shaft, a first set of arms (6) articulatedly mounted on and spaced around the end piece (5), a head piece (7) displaceable coaxially in relation to the shaft and a second like set of arms (8) articulatedly mounted on the and spaced around head piece. The arms of the first and second sets of arms are directly and articulatedly connected to one another at their free outer ends and form a winding body, which when the end piece (5) and head piece (7) are relatively closer together has a smaller axial (shaft-direction) dimension and so is suitable to support, and permit build up of, a flattened ball of yarn or the like, but when the head piece 7 and end piece 5 are farther apart contracts in transverse dimension to permit removal of the wound flattened ball. The arms may be covered by a flexible member. Such arms may be replaced by a resilient moulded member disposed between and fixed to the end piece and head piece, having the same support and shape characteristics as the connected arms.
