Procedure for the treatment of a metal oxide hydrogel characterized by contacting said hydrogel with a water-miscible, normally liquid, treatment agent having a structural formula selected from **(See formula)** where R is selected from hydrogen and methyl and ethyl radicals; R2 is selected from among alcohol radicals containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive, radicals R (-O-R3-) n where R3 is an alcohol radical containing from 2 to 3 carbon atoms, and n is an integer of 1 to 2, radicals (see formula) where R1 is defined as above and R4 is an alcoholic radical containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and radicals X-R3- where R3 is as defined and X is a chlorine, bromine substituent, iodine or cyano, then drying said hydrogel at an elevated temperature to separate said compound and any remaining water.
