Abstract

A process for preparing a chromene compound of the formula ** (See formula) ** wherein R1, R2 and R3 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl and alkoxy; R 4 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, acyl and alkyl; and R5 and R6 are selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aminoalkyl, acyl, hydroxy alkyl, carboxyl, carboxyalkyl, esterified hydroxyalkyl, esterified carboxyl and esterified carboxyalkyl, characterized in that it comprises the steps of dehydrogenating a chromium derivative of the formula ** (See formula) ** where R1, R2, R3, R5 and R6 have the meaning set forth above and is an acyl group, to form a compound of the formula I in which ** (See formula) ** R 4 is acyl and, when desired, a compound of the formula I in which R 4 is hydrogen, saponifying the above compound, and when desired a compound of the formula I in which R is alkyl, treating the compound of the formula I wherein R4 is hydrogen with an alkylating agent.
