A method to selectively inhibit the development of undesirable plants between agricultural crops, characterized by applying to an area in which an agricultural crop is growing or to the soil in a zone planted with an agricultural crop a lactam of formula ** (See formula) ** where R is hydrogen or a methyl group, with the proviso that at least one of these R is a methyl group, X is chloro, methyl, methoxy, or methylthio, with the proviso that if an X is methoxy or methylthio, the other X is chlorine, and n is the number 1 or 2, at a dose of application that inhibits the development of undesirable plants and that does not affect the development of the agricultural crop.
