Abstract

An optical fibre cable unit (1)has a central strength member (11), for providing increased tensile strength, a helically-wrapped corrugated tape (15) having a plurality of longitudinal grooves (17) and a plurality of optical fibres 21 laid into the longitudinal grooves. An outer layer (25) is provided to hold the fibres in place. The depth of the grooves is sufficient to receive one or more optical fibres which may be coated for protection. If a high fibre count cable is desired, it is possible to combine a plurality of cable units to form a composite cable.
