Abstract

A mooring winch comprises an hydraulic transmission including a pump 10, 11 in circuit with hydraulic motors 23 . . . 26 for operating the winch drum, a hand-controlled valve 22 for regulating the quantity of fluid fed to the motor by adjusting a fluid by-pass, and another bypass valve 32 in parallel with the motor and responsive to the pressure difference between inlet and outlet pipes 29, 30 of the motor to maintain the pressure difference constant, an adjusting device 52 . . . 57 varying the pressure difference and accordingly adjusting the tension in the mooring line. The pump comprises two radial-vane units 10, 11 in parallel, a safety valve 14 protecting the unit 10 and a one-way valve 16 passing fluid from the pump 11 to a common main pipe 18. The valve 22 is the same as the valve shown in Fig. I of Specification 777,230 (see Group XXIX). The motors comprise a three-chamber radial vane motor 23 . . . 25 and a radial vane motor 26. The bypass valve 32 is adjusted by a pin 52 connected to a lever 53 pivoted at 54 and having an upper cam surface engaged by a roller 56 mounted in a controller 57 slidable leftwards of Fig. 5 along guides 58 to increase the pressure acting on the pin, and hence the pressure difference at which the by-pass valve opens, and correspondingly to increase the tension in the mooring line. The controller 57 coacts with indicating marks along the guides 58. A bracket 59 on the lever 53 abuts with a pin 60 fast on a shaft 61 turned by a handle 62, links &c. 63 connecting the handle to a valve 33. For adjustable control of the by-pass valve 32, the handle 62 is turned to a first position where it is interlocked with the handle controlling the valve 22, the pin 60 disengaging from the bracket 59 and the link 53. The valve 33 then passes fluid in the motor outlet pipe 30 to pressure-operated valves 27, 28, similar to those described in Specification 887,194 (see Group XXIX), which are thereby opened to admit pressure fluid to circuits 25, 26 of the motor, and simultaneously to a pressure-operated valve 15 which opens to bypass the pump unit 11. Accordingly, the pump unit 10 alone supplies all four motor circuits 23 . . . 26 and automatic regulation of the motor circuit is obtained through the by-pass valve 32, as determined by the setting of the controller 57. In a second position of the handle 62, the pin 60 engages the bracket 59 and draws the pin 52 downwards so firmly that the by-pass valve 32 is held closed at all normal working pressures. At the same time the valve 33 is conditioned so to control the pressure actuator valves 15, 27, 28 that the pump unit 11 is brought into circuit, and the motor circuits 25, 26 are disconnected. The winch can then be used for cargo lifting &c. under the control of the hand-operated valve 22. The motor circuits 23, 24, 25 are constituted by separate chambers in one radial-vane motor, and the motor circuit 26 by a separate motor at the opposite end of the winch drum. Two or more winches can be driven from the same pump.
